2008 GOP Convention tune-up at the Xcel Center

Two views of the hall of the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on the Saturday before the scheduled start of the Republican National Convention, as work crews from the trades and media made final preparations for the event.

Earlier this evening the New York Times issued the following news alert:

Mandatory Hurricane Evacuation Is Ordered in New Orleans"

City officials ordered everyone to leave New Orleans beginning Sunday morning -- the first mandatory evacuation since Hurricane Katrina flooded the city three years ago -- as Hurricane Gustav grew into what the city's mayor called "the storm of the century" and moved toward the Louisiana coast.

Gustav may well delay the beginning of the convention.

In the coming days we shall hear Maverick again and again---defined as independent thinking, the nonconformist, the rebel. The ability to do the unexpected, without a thought for public reaction. But Maverick does not imply a thoughtful, considered approach to what may be good for society, for the people. A maverick makes decisions for him/herself, without concern for what others may think but also without regard for others.

A creative thinker, thinking 'outside the box' and who cares for the state of the world more than him or her self is Not a maverick. Such a thinker would not choose a path simply because it didn't conform---but because the path is one which makes sense, which enhances the common good.

'Maverick' will be tossed around even more in the next few days, a colloquialism which goes unquestioned with a guffaw. Here's hoping someone in the media will take it apart...
